The US start-up financed by Google co-founder Larry Page, Kitty Hawk, has announced its first product, Cora. It’s a self-flying, all-electric, vertical take-off and landing air taxi – and it’s about to start trials in New Zealand with the full cooperation and support of the NZ government.<\/p>\n
Watch Kitty Hawk’s video of Cora here.<\/strong><\/p>\n “After almost 8 years of engineering, re-engineering and re-re-engineering, we had done it,” says the launch announcement from Kitty Hawk.<\/p>\n “We had designed an air taxi, affectionately named Cora, that could take off like a helicopter and transition to flying like a plane. The possibilities were limitless.”<\/p>\n “Needless to say, we were excited. But there was a problem. A path to certifying an air taxi for everyday use just didn\u2019t exist.<\/p>\n “We quickly realized that there was only one place in the world that had everything we needed – New Zealand. New Zealand\u2019s Central Aviation Authority has the respect of the worldwide regulatory community. A people who embrace the future. And a dynamic economy that could serve as a springboard for Cora.<\/p>\n “What we didn\u2019t know was that New Zealand was also on a quest. They had already built one of the world\u2019s most sustainable energy ecosystems \u2013\u2013 with 80% of the country powered by renewable energy. And now they were looking to harness the benefits of the electric mobility revolution.”<\/p>\n Fred Reid, CEO of Kitty Hawk’s New Zealand venture Zephyr Airworks, remembers the moment when he met the government representatives, \u201cWe had no idea what to expect. They could have laughed us out of the room. We were pitching something that sounded like science fiction.\u201d<\/p>\n But Dr Peter Crabtree of New Zealand\u2019s Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) saw the opportunity immediately.<\/p>\n \u201cIn New Zealand, we know we can\u2019t keep using the same old approaches to meet our future challenges,” he said. “We saw Cora\u2019s potential as a sustainable, efficient and transformative technology that can enrich people\u2019s lives, not only in New Zealand, but ultimately the whole world.\u201d<\/p>\n From this meeting of minds has come a better partnership than Kitty Hawk thought possible.<\/p>\n “Together with MBIE, New Zealand\u2019s Ministry of Transport and the Civil Aviation Authority were willing to work with us. Cora is all-electric – and that’s what has appealed to the New Zealand authorities.

Twelve electrically-driven props allow Cora to takeoff and landing vertically while the pusher prop at the rear of the fuselage gives forward air speed.

\n<\/strong>Type: Air taxi for two passengers
\nPower:\u00a0All-electric
\nOpetrating altitude: 500ft-3,000ft above ground
\nWingspan:\u00a036 feet\/about 11 metres
\nVertical take-off and landing: Cora is powered by 12 independent lift fans, which enable it take off and land vertically like a helicopter
\nFixed wing flight: Single propeller
\nRange: Initially about 62 miles\/100 kilometres.
\nSpeed: About 110 miles per hour\/about 180 kilometres per hour.
\nRegulation:\u00a0Cora has an experimental airworthiness certificate from both the New Zealand Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) and the United States Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Kitty Hawk is working with the CAA on further certification goals to bring an air taxi service to the commercial market.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
